NextReef SMR1 Solid Media Reactors

Introducing the NextReef SMR1 Media Reactor

A NextReef Original ...

Developed in conjunction with the original US Distributor of NP BioPellets*, the NextReef SMR1 was the first media/substrate reactor specifically designed for long term use of larger media.  We've been refining them ever since, and they're still the best performing BioPellet/BioPlastic reactor available.

Evolved from our MR1 Media/Substrate Reactors, the NextReef SMR1 fills a specialized role while retaining the quality and ease of use you'd expect from a NextReef reactor.  They're a perfect match for any brand of BioPellet media!

Two sizes are available.  The SMR1 is 16" tall overall, with a 14" reaction chamber, and the SMR1 XL is 23" overall with a 21" reaction chamber.

*NP Biopellets are a trademark and product of D. Van Houten .  NextReef Systems does not manufacture or sell NP BioPellets.

What's Different?

The NextReef SMR1 is based on our standard MR1 media/substrate reactors, but with some significant changes...

    • Blue acrylic for the main body.  Made specially for us, the translucent blue color serves an important purpose - it keeps out light to reduce algae and opimize beneficial bacterial growth.   They're great in lighted sumps, or anywhere light exposure is a concern.

    • Modified internal plenum assembly.   Our original design works great with sponges and small media - the SMR1 eliminates the sponges to reduce maintenance.  Since BioPellets and Zeolithic media are designed for long term use, reducing maintainence fosters system stability .

    • Higher flow rates and reduced head pressure .  The SMR1 comes set up to use larger fittings than our original reactors, so it  flows more water with less restriction .  The NextReef SMR1 flows enough water to easily fluidize larger media.

The SMR1 features plenums laser-cut from 3/16" acrylic.  They're thick, they're heavy, they're strong... and they flow great.

Every NextReef Reactor is hand-crafted in the USA from the highest quality materials, and CAD engineered / CNC cut for a precise fit.

Reactor Use

SMR1 Reactors are multi-functional - some suggested uses include:

    • Any brand of BioPellet / BioPlastic media

    • Zeolitic Media

    • Denitrification Media

Q:  Is there anyting I can't run in the SMR1?

A: No, your choices are unlimited.  Simply purchase a set of sponges (available from your NextReef retailer) and the SMR1 can also run phosphate media, activated carbon or any fine/small media.

works very well August 22, 2011
Reviewer: s. brown from Athens, TN United States
I have been using biopellets for 3 months or more with
little improvement in nitrate levels in a standard foam type reactor which allowed no tumbling. After reading that biopellets needed a reasonable amount of tumbling I thought I would give reactor a try that was designed with biopellets in mind so I bought the next reef reactor - after a little over 3 weeks my nitrates are at 0 once again.  I'm very pleased with this product.

Next Reef SMR1

I just started using Bio Pellets on one my tanks so I can't say anything about the Bio Pellets yet but what I can say is the Next Reef reactors are rock solid and built like a tank. I have 4 MR1's and a SMR1 and I'm getting ready to buy a couple more MR1's to run Carbon and GFO on other tanks.

Like the other reviewer I can't speak to the pellets but the reactor has great build quality (like other nextreef reactors) and is working well for the level of flow I have dialed into for these pellets.

Quality is excellent.
Reviewer: Gorgok from Cypress, TX
Excellent build quality and materials. Filling and plumbing it up was easy as can be, especially since mine is on its own separate loop. Plus having the thing running looks pretty.

The only thing that could have been better i suppose is the fittings are a funny size at 5/8". But i think my hose is 3/4" and it holds on just fine, my pump outlet is 3/4" as well. If my hose is 5/8" then it fit onto
